As my unit 2 sharing central question, ‘How are memories being recorded’,
I am working on the preservation of memory by using various ways of recording.
Last semester can be summarised by these questions,
How can my memories about spaces carried physically and rebuilt?
How can memories about places could be carried over time and places?
I focused on the exploration of specific meaningful places of mine and the presentation of my memories in those places at the same time traveling and rebuilding the personal memory of specific space.
This term, I began from focusing and anchoring myself on ‘memory’ and ‘record’
Why do I intentionally try to remember? and according to that, trying to record?
I started with questioning about my personal behaviour.
This project started with personal collected memory artefacts.
How can I preserve personal memory as a graphic designer?
What is the role of designing process to preserve, curate and present memory artefacts?
How are memories being presented / curated in an archived format?
I was exploring methods of archiving memory and processes of curating archived fragments.
Changing the context and situation of my memory collection, I explored various archival methods, and in the second experiment, I inspired by the process of time capsules and the process of cyanotype. Documented and presented memory artefacts in cyanotype, then listed the order of the records, juxtaposed, explained, and how memories are read and guided by flow.
Through triangulation process, I was able to relate my works with other projects, it assisted me to think about the object of memory, and the subject of memory who remembers.
Analysing Clevis’ work, the interesting aspect was ‘what if you reconstruct your memory from what’s missing? what if you start recording of what’s missing? or missed memories, context, or contents?
What I tried was to remember what I have, If you reconstruct the memory from already missing?
How can I start recording from reverse order?
I reflected about the process of recording, changing the orders of them.
The characteristics of memory retention was also interesting discovery. About the intentional conservation or not intentional conservation. Is it a storing or excavation?
Through multiple experiments and iterations, such parts of memory as mobility could be explored, could be explored more, and there are also possible to explore the parts, such as fixedness.
Due to the amount and principle of light in cyanotype process, some parts were revealed, and some aspects of memories were concealed, and seems like it is combining with the characteristics of memory.
Adding to this, I also set myself to develop such questions in the future, ’what is the site, object, or history will I focus on?’
‘What kind of method of curating archived content do I want to really develop?’
